AI search optimization
that gets you cited, not just crawled.
ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews now answer the question before anyone clicks a blue link. We build and fix websites so those assistants can read them, trust them, and name your business in the answer. People call it AEO or GEO. We call it SEO done properly.
Begin the ConversationAI search optimization — also sold as answer engine optimization (AEO) or generative engine optimization (GEO) — is the work of making your business the source ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews quote. Axesris does it with crawlable pages, direct answers, structured data, consistent facts across the web, and tracking that proves which assistant sent the lead.
Here is our position, stated plainly: AEO is not a separate discipline. It is SEO done properly. The things that get a page cited by an AI assistant are the same things that have always made a page rank — a fast site that serves real HTML, a clear answer to the question someone asked, facts that match everywhere your business appears, and evidence from other people that you are who you say you are. What changed is the penalty for skipping them. A search engine would still show a sloppy page on page two. An assistant that writes one answer simply leaves you out.
So why use the term at all? Because people search for it. Owners type "AEO agency", "ChatGPT SEO" and "how to rank in ChatGPT" because they have noticed customers asking assistants instead of searching — and they are right to notice. This page explains what those terms mean, how the assistants actually choose their sources, and what we do about it. No new acronym required.
It matters more than most owners think. In our experience, AI search is where our clients' best-quality leads and sales come from. Someone who asks ChatGPT "who builds X near me" and gets your name has already had the comparison done for them. They arrive informed, and they arrive ready. The traffic is smaller than Google's in many accounts — and in some it already is not.
AI search optimization sits inside our SEO and AI ranking work, which starts from $550 a month. It is not an add-on we bolt to a plan. It is how we build every page.
How ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews pick who to cite.
Each assistant works a little differently, but the pattern is the same. When a question needs current or local information, the assistant runs a search — ChatGPT and Perplexity use their own crawlers and search partners, Gemini and Google AI Overviews draw on Google's index — then reads a handful of pages and writes an answer from the ones it can parse and trust. Six things decide whether your page is one of them.
Crawlable HTML. Many AI crawlers do not run JavaScript. If your services, prices and contact details only appear after a script loads, the crawler sees an empty page. Content has to be in the HTML the server sends.
Clear, direct answers. Assistants lift sentences. A page that answers "how much does it cost" in its first two lines gets quoted; a page that opens with three paragraphs of brand story does not.
Entities and structured data. Schema markup — Organization, Service, FAQPage, LocalBusiness — tells machines exactly what your business is, what it sells and where it works. It removes guesswork, and assistants prefer sources they do not have to guess about.
Consistent facts across the web. Your name, address, phone, services and hours should read the same on your site, your Google Business Profile, directories and social profiles. Conflicting facts lower confidence, and a low-confidence source gets dropped.
Reviews and citations. Assistants weigh what others say about you: reviews, mentions, links, listings. A business nobody else talks about is hard to recommend.
Speed. Assistants fetch pages live and move on from slow ones. A page that times out is a page that was never read.
What answer engine optimization looks like when it is done.
Every key page opens with a short paragraph that defines the service and says who provides it — written to be quoted. H1s and H2s use the exact phrases people ask. Answers come first; supporting detail follows.
Structured data on every page: Organization for who you are, Service for what you sell and where, FAQPage mirroring the questions on the page, plus breadcrumbs. Validated, and kept honest — no markup for reviews you do not have.
A plain-text file at the root of your site that summarizes what the business is, what it offers, and which pages explain each thing. We are straight about it: Google says its AI features need no special files, and no major assistant has said it reads one. It costs almost nothing to keep, so we add it — but it is never the thing doing the work.
Explicit permission for GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended and the rest. Plenty of sites block them by accident through a security plugin or a copied rule. We check, and we fix it.
One version of your business everywhere: name, address, phone, services, founding facts and profile links aligned across your site, Google Business Profile, directories and social accounts, and tied together with sameAs links in your schema.
Content delivered in the HTML, not assembled by scripts in the browser. Light pages, compressed images, quick response times — so a crawler with a few seconds to spare reads the whole thing.
Sessions from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and similar sources grouped into their own channel in Google Analytics 4, with form and order conversions attached — so you can see which assistant sends leads that close.
From a question in ChatGPT to a lead in your CRM.
- ChatGPT · Perplexity · GeminiCustomer asks a question
- AI crawlerReads your robots.txt and HTML
- Schema + direct answerAssistant confirms who you are and what you do
- AI answerYour business is cited with a link
- GA4Visit tagged as an AI referral
- CRMLead saved with its first-touch source
If any link in that chain is missing, the lead either never arrives or arrives with no record of where it came from.
What the numbers showed once we looked.
For a B2B supplier, we connected the website to an existing Quickbase app and rebuilt how leads were recorded. Before the tracking was fixed, analytics showed zero conversions from 1,840 direct sessions, 750 ChatGPT sessions and 308 Google sessions. The visitors were arriving. Nothing was recording where they came from. And once we looked at the sources, the headline was hard to miss: ChatGPT was sending more than twice Google's traffic.
That is why tracking is part of AI search optimization, not an afterthought. We now record first- and last-touch source on every lead, so the business can see which channel produced each request — including the assistants.
For a business that sells both online and in person, alongside a Stripe and HubSpot checkout-to-CRM system, the build shipped 1,230 pages with zero on-page SEO defects. That is the unglamorous foundation assistants rely on. You cannot be cited from a page a crawler cannot make sense of.
Why a business never shows up in ChatGPT.
A security plugin, a firewall rule or a copied robots.txt turns away GPTBot and PerplexityBot. The site looks fine to people and is invisible to assistants.
Page builders and app-style sites that render text in the browser. The crawler receives a shell with no services, no prices and no answers in it.
Markup copied from a theme, review stars with no reviews behind them, or schema that contradicts the page. We have removed fabricated rating markup from a live store and replaced it with real schema. Search engines and assistants both treat false markup as a reason to distrust the source.
Two phone numbers, an old address on a directory, a service list on Google that no longer matches the site. Each conflict makes an assistant less willing to name you.
AI referrals lumped into "direct" or lost entirely because the form never fired a conversion. You cannot invest in a channel you cannot see.
AI search optimization, answered.
What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?
Answer engine optimization is the practice of making your website the source AI assistants like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews quote when they answer a question. In practice it is SEO done properly: crawlable HTML, direct answers, structured data, consistent business facts across the web, real reviews and fast pages. GEO, or generative engine optimization, means the same thing.
How do I rank in ChatGPT?
Make sure ChatGPT's crawlers are allowed in your robots.txt, put your key information in the page HTML rather than behind scripts, answer the questions customers ask in the first lines of each page, add Organization, Service and FAQPage schema, and keep your name, address, phone and services identical everywhere your business is listed. Reviews and mentions on other sites help it trust you.
Is AEO different from SEO?
Not in any way that matters to an owner. The signals that get a page cited by an AI assistant are the signals that have always made a page rank. The difference is that an assistant writes one answer instead of showing ten links, so a page that would have ranked on page two is now simply left out. Doing SEO properly covers AEO.
How do I get into Google AI Overviews?
Google AI Overviews draw on pages already in Google's index, so the work starts with normal indexing and ranking. Then structure each page so a clear, self-contained answer sits near the top, mark it up with schema, keep the page fast, and make sure your Google Business Profile matches your site.
Can I track leads that come from ChatGPT?
Yes. Visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and other assistants carry a referrer that Google Analytics 4 can group into its own AI channel. We set that up, attach your form and order conversions to it, and record the first-touch source on each lead in your CRM so you can see which assistant sent the customer.
How much does AI search optimization cost?
AI search optimization is part of our SEO and AI ranking service, which starts from $550 a month. A one-time fix — opening robots.txt to AI crawlers, adding schema and llms.txt, restructuring key pages and setting up GA4 tracking — is scoped per project after we look at your site.
AI search optimization is one part of being found. The ongoing ranking work lives in SEO & AI ranking. If the site itself is slow or built on scripts crawlers cannot read, start with website rescue or a new custom website. Reviews feed the trust assistants look for — see review management. If you are not sure where AI search fits against everything else, a systems audit or digital strategy engagement will tell you. And to see the systems behind the numbers above, visit our systems work.
